Use target-KB compression when the upload rule is strict, such as a form requiring an image under a specific size.

A smaller target can reduce visible quality. If the result looks poor, reduce pixel dimensions first, then compress again.

Keep notes about the target size and settings if you need to prepare the same type of file repeatedly.

Output quality checklist

• Open the downloaded file and compare it with the original.
• Check faces, logos, labels, and small text at the size users will actually see.
• Confirm the file format, dimensions, and file size match the destination requirement.

Common mistake to avoid

Do not overwrite the only copy of an important image. Browser tools are fast, but the safest workflow is to preserve originals and publish only the processed copy.

Suppose a form accepts a maximum of 1 MB for four photos combined. Set a per-image goal below 250 KB, not exactly 250 KB, because the form may count decimal MB and may add its own processing overhead. Start at 200 KB per image, set max width to 1600 pixels, and export photos as JPG. Download the results and add the four actual file sizes before submitting.

• Text-heavy screenshot: Inspect letters after export. JPG artifacts can make small type unreadable; a larger target or another format may be necessary.
• Transparent logo: JPG removes transparency. Use a format-preserving tool if the destination requires a transparent background.
• Very small target: A target can be impossible at a usable resolution. The tool must report the actual size when it cannot meet the requested limit; do not treat a processed file as proof that it is compliant.

The output is a new file, not a replacement for the original. Reopen it at its intended display size and compare detail before upload.
